In the course of SFI’s “International dialogue on NFI experiences”, 21.08.2024 experts from Kyrgyzstan and the implementing consortium by Unique land use GmbH, Freiburg and CAREC (Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program) presented the second National Forest Inventory for Kyrgyzstan (NFI#2, which was implemented during 2019-2023). Ukrainian NFI team and other international experts from the continuously growing NFI participated in this event.
The participants, including Viktor Melnychenko, Director General of Ukrderzhlisproject, Volker Sasse, SFI Project Leader, Andriy Shamray, Head of CNFI, Vitaliy Storozhuk, SFI National Project Coordinator, Viktor Myroniuk, SFI – Expert, and other experts, participated and got familiarized methodology and outputs of the NFI in Kyrgyzstan.
Andriy Shamray started with a short overview of the NFI in the Ukraine and its current status under war conditions.
The presentation on the second NFI in Kyrgyzstan was held by Kuban Matraimov from CAREC, director of the branch of the Regional Central Asia Environmental Center in Kyrgyzstan, National Coordinator of the NFI#2 and Axel Weinreich from Unique land use. Unique and CAREC have been hired to implement the NFI, which was initiated by SAEPF (nowadays: Forest Service of Kyrgyzstan), funded by World Bank and GEF within the project “Integrated Management of Forest Ecosystems of the Kyrgyz Republic” (IFEMP).
The main topic, the presentation on the NFI#2 for Kyrgyzstan covered the objectives, the selected design and methodology, informed about the field work in 2020 and 2021, the NFI software, the data analysis and the results. The results have been published officially in October 2023 and are available on the official NFI website as report and maps (https://nfi2-kyrgyzstan.info/).
The lively discussion brought up a specific interest from experts working on the first NFI in Tajikistan. Increment data and the source – bore cores sampled for increment and age – have been further discussed and several aspects of the country wide land cover and forest type analysis based on Sentinel-2 images as well as the NFI software developed and used by Unique land use.
